The Need
For over 100 years, Child & Family Guidance Center has provided much needed services to our community. CFGC is a community based mental health agency with a tradition of service, a reputation for quality, and a record of effectiveness. Through its main location and strategically located satellites, CFGC served over 10,000 individuals last year. Under the direction of a professionally trained staff, each program is designed to enhance functioning while identifying and addressing emotional and psychological needs and problems. A continuum of quality, community-based services including prevention, assessment, counseling, family education and professional training are provided to families in need. Did You Know That……… · The State of Texas ranks 49th in the nation in per capita spending for mental health care. · Approximately 16 percent of prisoners in Texas have a mental illness. · 50 percent of youth in the Texas Youth Commission have a mental disorder. · America suffers from a serious, long-term shortage of child psychiatrists the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists (AACAP), estimates that, nationally, there are only 7,000 practitioners. · Suicide is the third leading cause of death among U.S. adolescents. · More than half of patients suffering from schizophrenia do not receive proper doses of anti-psychotic medications or appropriate psychosocial interventions. · Up to 25 percent of women have experienced domestic violence in their lifetime, resulting in immediate injury and/or long-term chronic medical conditions such as depression. · In Dallas County alone, an average of 5,000 Dallas County children are confirmed as victims of child abuse and neglect every year. · 20% of Dallas County children live in poverty (132,000 in 2008).
